During our stay in Bangkok, we also visited Vimanmek- the world's largest golden teakwood mansion. Upon his return from Europe in 1897, H.M. King Rama V (1868-1910) used his personal money to purchase orchards and paddy fields between Padung Krungkasem Canal and Samsen Canal for the construction of a royal garden which he named "The Dusit Garden".
The first permanent residence in Dusit Garden was Vimanmek Mansion, built in 1900 by royal command of H.M. King Rama V. The celebration for the completion of Vimanmek Mansion held on March 27, 1901. H.M. King Rama V then moved from the Grand Palace for five years until the completion of Amporn Satan Villa in 1906 where he live until his demise in 1910.
Vimanmek mansion is the world's largest golden teakwood mansion with its elaborate architectural style reflectiong a western influence. The building has two right-angled wings. Each wing is 60 meters long and 20 meters high, and is storey except for the part where H.M. King Rama V resided, which is octagonal and four-storey. Although the ground floor is brick and cement, the other floors are built of beautiful golden teakwood. Altogether, there are 31 exhibition rooms, with the bedroom, the throne room and bathroom maintaining the atmosphere of the Thai past.
Besides Vimanmek Mansion and Amporn Satarn Villa in the compound of Dusit Garden (Dusit Palace), H.M. King Rama V allocated plots of land for the construction of residences for his consort, princesses, and younger sisters which have been turned into exhibition buildings and a hall for royal coaches on show to the public. Some of the residential halls are-- Suan Bua Residential hall which art objects presented to His Majesty the King and other occasions are on display in this building. HRH Princess Bussaban Bua-phan Residential Hall and HRH Princess Arun-wadi Residential Hall, Now the buildings features displays of photographs taken by King Rama IX. HRH Princess Puang Soi Sa--ang Residential Hall, presently, it is displayed old timepieces and souvenirs from foreign countries. Most of the clocks were purchased by H.M. King Chulalongkorn from England, Germany and the United States. HRH Princess Orathai Thep-kanya Residential Hall Nowadays, it is displayed fabrics ever used in the court of H.M. King Chulalongkorn such as Shanghai brocade silk, gold brocade cloth, satin, Pha poom (silkwoven cloth with warp ikat patterns) and various types of printed fabric.
There are cabinets in front of every buildings and everyone is not allowed to bring anything inside specially camera and cellphone so we couldn't take some pictures inside. But here are the pictures taken from outside. They are the Vimanmek Mansion, The Ananda Samakhom Throne Hall, Abhisek Dusit Throne Hall, etc.. Oh, can you see that big tree? Our arms are not long enough to hug around that tree.
